General information about
Margarita Island

Arrival and Departure Your passport needs to be valid for 6 or more months. If you are travelling with children do not forget to bring an identification card with the child’s photograph. Upon your arrival you will fill in a tourist card which serves as your tourist visa. Do not lose this copy because you will have to hand it to the customs officer upon departure. You might also have to pay an exit tax of approximately $20 if your airline has not included this fee when you purchased your ticket.

Money The Venezuelan currency is the Bolivar. The best tip is to bring US$ in traveller checks or cash. Credit cards are broadly accepted but it has some huge disadvantages. With the foreign exchange laws you pay about 10 percent more if you use it! At the moment you will get approximately 2500 Bolivares for $1 and about 2700 for 1 Euro.

Time difference Venezuela is in the summer 6 hours, in the winter 5 hours ahead of middle European time. It is one hour behind Miami-time in winter but same time in summer.

Voltage 110 Volt

Vaccination There are no required vaccinations for visiting Isla Margarita or the guided trips to the Venezuela mainland. However, there is recommended to get a vaccination against hepatitis A, yellow fever and typhoid. Consult with your doctor or vaccinationcentral about possible recommendations.

Health Although it is absolutely safe to shower or brush your teeth with tap-water it is recommended to drink only bottled water. Many bars and restaurants use filtered water for the drinks. There are also good doctors and clinics on Isla de Margarita if something emergent would happen.
