Shopping in Margarita Island

The shopping in Margarita Island offers interesting shopping opportunities. Isla de Margarita is a duty-free port. Both Venezuelans and traveller like to take advantage of this. The goods are declared exempt from tax and this makes the prices about 15-20% lower than on the Venezuelan mainland.

Here is the buying demand strong and people buy Cartier watches, Calvin Klein-jeans, liquor and expensive perfumes for a fraction of the normal price. One favourite is also the pearl necklaces which are amazingly cheap to buy, especially the long ones.

Around the island, you will come across locally produced jewellery and ceramic wares of varying quality. One of the nicer and more readily available handicrafts for sale on Isla de Margarita are the local hammocks, or chinchorro.

These hammocks are an intricate weave of thin strands of rough natural fibers. You will also find woven baskets, hats, and handbags. The shopping in Isla de Margarita is worth its price. The price level of the island is about 1/3 compared with the neighbouring island Aruba. As a European or American citizien the best buys are: Cuban cigars, rum, jeans, pirat copied clothes, handmade hammocks or Venezuelan coffee.
